  • About the manufacturer: The Larkin Company was a significant player in the industrial history of Buffalo, New York, and the United States. John D. Larkin founded the company in 1875 with a focus on producing soap, but it rapidly expanded its production capabilities to include a wide variety of household goods. By the early 1900s, the Larkin Company had become one of the most prosperous manufacturers in the country. The company's success was due in part to its innovative marketing techniques, including direct mail campaigns that allowed customers to order products directly from the company's catalogs. The company also became known for its progressive policies towards workers, including providing them with healthcare and pension benefits. The Larkin Company remained a prominent fixture in Buffalo until the mid-20th century, when it began to decline due to changing economic conditions.

The Larkin Company's success was not limited to soap and household goods. The company's diverse product offerings included furniture, food, drugs, and paint, among other items. The Larkin Company's reputation for quality products and fair treatment of workers made it a popular brand among consumers. The company's growth was also fueled by its use of advanced manufacturing techniques, such as assembly line production, that allowed it to produce goods more efficiently. The Larkin Company's legacy lives on today, with the former headquarters building serving as a prime example of innovative architecture and design. The company's impact on Buffalo and the American industrial landscape cannot be overstated, and it remains a fascinating case study in the history of American business.
